Title: Urban Landscape
Medium: Wood, foam, cardboard, wire Size: 30.48cm x 30.48cm March 2016 Exhibition Text The main focus of this urban landscape was to explore the concepts in constructing visionary, multi-layered, urban landscapes. Along with that, I was to experiment with modeling, assembling, adding/removing parts, and the overall aspect of it. My inner challenge with it was using materials that I wasn't really comfortable with. All is self-made within the medium. |

Inspiration
I created this piece out of a combination of well known Milwaukee bridges, and buildings I have seen throughout the city. I like the general concept and look of the bridges to the right, one which is called the Hoan Bridge (close to the summer fest grounds) and another one that is located near downtown, on 6th street. My project displays this same architecture idea with the wire like "beams" coming down from a building, and for the bridge for people to cross in, topped with a curve-like shaped top near the end. Since my project was about. I wanted my final piece to resemble a calm environment in which buildings aren't so cramped like in Chicago, New York, places like that; but instead, a place where people could go for a walk and have a settling city surrounding them. |
Meaning behind the Piece
The city of Milwaukee is one of the most important things to me. I was born and raised here, so making an urban landscape was a way for me to express what Milwaukee is too me. I think this city has a little bit of everything, and the segregation that exists among us ruins the nice things about it. We are lucky to have the lake, the art museum, places for entertainment, and beautifully constructed buildings that give our city that special view. All of these things contribute to make a nice environment, which is why I attempted to do the same thing with my piece.

Reflection
I have to say that I was completely lost at the beginning of this project. I'm a very detailed person, so when I found out that we were building an urban landscape, my first idea was to make really fancy stuff out of glass and plastic, but we had to make it out of wood and other solid materials, so I was kind of disappointed by that because you can't do as many things with wood as with others. I managed to brainstorm enough and get my ideas together to successfully finish my project. The whole project consisted of a trial and error-like process, were I would place things in a certain order and then rearrange them if I didn't like it, or kept the idea if I did. The project was fun to do, and if I were to make another one, I'd definitely incorporate glass into it.
