Title: Inspiration
Medium: Marker on Paper Size: 60.96 cm x 91.44 cm November 2016 Exhibition Text The main focus of this project was to create a piece that allowed me to go beyond my comfort zone. I had alwaus been interested in the art of calligraphy and letter making, so I decided to pursue a project doing just that. I used calligraphy markers and a poster paper to replicate one of Gahdi's famous quotes. My artistic inspiration comes from Mateusz Witczak, a typography illustrator. All is self-made within the meduim. |
Process
Pencil
The very first step for my project was to write the words from Gahdi's quote on to the poster, but with pencil. It was an easy process, because whatever mistake I made could be fixed with an eraser. This process took around 45 minutes and was the most difficult because everything done with pencil was going to be outlined with marker, so everything had to be precise. |
Marker
The second part of the process consisted of passing the markers over the pencil outline. Using the calligraphy markers was a little harder than I thought because they allow you to write differently based on the position you hold them, so when i tried to make thick/thin letters, I had to practice with a separate sheet of paper before applying the technique on the poster board. I passed everything that was made in pencil first and was very careful in the process. |
Artistic Inspiration
My main inspiration for this project was a typography illustrator named Mateusz Witczak. His work is recognized amongst places like the technology industry and logo companies. One of his pieces that caught my eye the most was one he did for the company called Phillips. in which he was given the opportunity to create designs with hand-written lettering in order to promote their new urban headphones campaign. I attempted to use his work as an inspiration by imitating some of his designs into my piece. The use of continuous lines and patterns he formed with interconnecting lines was what I aimed at the most. The most inspiring piece is pictured down below.

Meaning/Theme of the Piece
My piece was based off of a quote by Mahatma Gandhi which reads "The day the power of love overrules the love of power the world will know peace". I chose this quote because with the recent presidential elections and everything else that is noted in society, we have to stop for a moment and realize that love is what overrules anything. Violence in this country has clearly risen due to the comments of some presidential candidates, and what people don't realize is how hurtful they can really be towards a specific person or a population of a whole. With the making of this piece, I intend to create awareness towards love and compassion so that we realize that what we need is more of that in our lives to live in peace, just like the quote says. |
Reflection
This piece was the one that led me to questioning the most. I often thought about ways in which I could make new letters, but as I kept working on the project, I realized that making those letters is not as easy as I thought. Working with the markers was not as manageable, although they did help me accomplish my view of some of the lettering that I had in mind. I think that this piece is one of the most crafty ones, meaning that it could be displayed as a sign or a poster rather than a work of art. I don't myself don't know if I consider it a work of art, solely because it looks more of a project for a class than a piece, but what I do know is that I developed many new techniques in the process of creating letters and designs for this calligraphy project. The art of typography is to discover nee designs and to be creative with the lettering, which is something that I think I did successfully. |
ACT Questions
The central idea around my inspirational research involves looking for an artist that was unique, both in his style and his writing. The view that my inspiration has is the same as mine, he looks for ways to convey a message, in this case with intriguin typeography to promote headphones, but I do it to promote peace. The visuals play a constant role in our everyday lives and we both use it to our convenience.
